PHP on the Rise in the Enterprise

posted by bit.santos on Thursday, February 18, 2010 - 10:48

PHP has long established itself as one of the prevalent technologies used for building the web, but it has never gained much traction on the enterprise level being stigmatized as a child’s language in the world of programming languages, until now.

While Java isn’t going away, there are several trends converging on increased adoption of dynamic programming languages like PHP among enterprise developers, as [CEO of ActiveState, Bart] Copeland noted to me, calling them “the workhorses of IT and programming”...

The enterprise has long favored Java and .Net, but PHP and other dynamic programming languages have left their infancies and are rapidly closing the gap on their more stodgy competitors.

The big corporations and companies seem to be warming up to the use of PHP (as well as other open source technologies), opening up their big gilded gates to business with the small guys.

The Internet Turns 40!

posted by bit.santos on Friday, October 30, 2009 - 15:35

I was just doing my daily rounds on the websites I regularly visit when I was pleasantly surprised to find that today the Internet celebrates its 40th birthday!

Since the Internet is where we here at Spinweb make our living, I think this occasion deserves some cake, so here it is.

Happy Birthday, Internet!

By sheer coincidence, Spinweb celebrated our new office layout with lechon manok and pancit. Good times all around!

Developing Spinweb.ph in Drupal, Part I

posted by bit.santos on Tuesday, October 20, 2009 - 10:46

We've been pushing Drupal to our clients for the past few years already, but I'm a bit ashamed to admit that we've only found the time to put our own site on it just now. While we could've done it earlier, we're quite sure that now we have a few Drupal sites under our belts, we know we did this site the right way.

I could probably go through a quick overview of how we made the entire site in one entry but that would just make it seem like we're bragging about it. Instead, I'll go through two of the more interesting parts of the site: the portfolio and the blog. (Aside: The rest of the site is core Drupal and boring anyway.) Hopefully that way, you guys might learn something from what we did, and maybe we can learn something from you too (leave a comment, people!).

For Part I, I'll go into the Portfolio - a must have for any web developer/designer's website.

Hello World

posted by bit.santos on Thursday, October 15, 2009 - 12:04

Hello world!

Welcome to the brand new official Spinweb Blog. What should you be expecting from this little web log of ours? For a quick overview, let me run through our blog categories above:

  1. Drupal - We believe we are the premiere Drupal developer in the region, and we are eager to share our knowledge and experience in building websites and services with this wonderful open-source solution.
  2. Design - For the past nine years, we have built a reputation of providing our clients with cutting-edge designs. Our team of creative designers will be sharing our beliefs and philosophies in the field of web, graphic, user interface, and ultimately, information design.
  3. Code - Our talented team of developers have worked on a myriad of projects, each with its own set of problems and issues. A lot of the time, we've had to jump right into code to build the solution. We'd like to take the time to contribute some our solutions back to the community.
  4. Business - We're a relatively small outfit (small merely in number) so the way we do business is sometimes a bit unorthodox. Our unique approach to projects has so far served us well, and we think some of you might appreciate it.
  5. Experiments - We're an adventurous and creative bunch. We'll occasionally be showcasing proofs-of-concept that just might turn into something useful someday.
  6. Announcements - Every now and then there's something we just need to share with the world about our little company.
  7. Miscellaneous - There's always a need for a do-it-all, catch-all category for everything else, right?

We welcome your feedback and we look forward to this little blogging adventure that we'll be taking.

The real blogging will start soon. ;)
